November 1st – November 15th “40 Years 40 Pieces of Art” Exhibition


TEV which has been supporting education for 40 years and in 39 years which has given scholarships to 143.000 students, the 40th year activities will start with the 40 Years 40 Pieces of Art” Photography Exhibition during 1 – 15 Nov. in EKAV.

In the exhibition,  famous photography artist Thierry Bouet, Ara Güler, İzzet Keribar, Cem Boyner, Serdar Bilgili, Bedri Baykam, Mehmet Günyeli, Rauf Denktaş, İbrahim Zaman, Şakir Eczacıbaşı, Halim Kulaksız, Sabit Kalfagil, Gökşin Sipahioğlu, Nevzat Çakır, Ahmet Kuzik, Muhsin Divan, Osman Erk, Şemsi Güner, Lütfi Özgünaydın and Reha Bilir’s 40 photographs will be exhibited.

For this education and human themed  exhibition Thierry Bouet has shot his photographs in Diyarbakır. With the income of the exhibition new scholarship students will be supported.

About TEV

TEV was founded in 1967 by deceased Vehbi Koç and 201 benevolent people who believed in the education matter.

 

The aim of establishment of the foundation is giving scholarship to successful students who need economic support, to open schools, student dormitories, making researches about education, encouraging the cooperation of industry and university education.

 

When during the foundation years 119 students were having scholarship, today  nearly 143 thousands of students are taking advantages  of  them.

 

TEV is not limiting it’s contribution to education  with the scholarships but opened 14 primary schools, 2 high schools, 2 dormitory buildings and 1 civil education center in various places of the country.

A. Halim Kulaksız

A.Halim Kulaksız was born in Şiran, Gümüşhane in 1944. He started taking photographs during the high school years. In the year 1972 he graduated with honor from New York Institute of Photography.

 

He had many personal exhibitions, had awards in many competitions. Became jury member in various photography competitions in his country and abroad.. He achieved AFIAP title in the International Center of Photography.

 

During 1979 – 1981 years worked as an academician in the Mimar Sinan University.

In the year 1969 with his brothers founded Refo Color Photograph Laboratory.

In the year 1988 started publishing Refo Art of Photography magazine and continued until1991.

In the year 2004 together with his sons founded DIFO Lab, The Digital Photography Laboratory.

Since 1998 in the Art Faculty of Marmara University he is giving lessons as an academician.

 

He attended to education seminars of various firms and made observations about photography in different countries.

Ahmet Kuzik

He was born in Kadikoy – Istanbul, in 27 June 1952. Completed Finance and Accounting High School. He started his photography adventure “tangling” with the camera of one of his friends and asking questions about photography during the university years.

 

“When I was seeking after something without knowing what I was looking for, I understood that I was looking for photography.”

 

After all competitions, awards, exhibitions, slide shows.Together with three friends of him which they set up a group (GIFA) they opened 2 collective exhibitions. In the year 1985 he opened his own workshop and start working professionally.

 

He attended many national and international exhibitions. Most of all in Istanbul in different cities of Turkey and in Cyprus, Berlin, Warsaw, Paris,Washington his photographs took place nearly 50 mixed exhibitions.

“Most of all I enjoy capturing human being inside the life passing by, in his domain with all his ambience. I can tell that this is almost a duty for me. On the other hand, Istanbul, nature and night sights shooting is a big pleasure for me.”

 

Most of his photographs in his archive are used and being used in various books, magazines, encyclopedias and calendars.

 

His translations about photograph were published in New Photograph, Varlık, IFSAK Photograph – Cinema magazines.

Ara Güler

Ara Güler was born in Istanbul, in 1928. In Turkey he is the most important representative of creative photography who gained international fame. He started journalism in 1950 in Yeni İstanbul newspaper, he became photo reporter of Time-Life in 1956 and Paris-Match and Stern in 1958. In the same period attended to Magnum Agency. In 1961 British Journal of Photography Year Book defined him one of the seven best photographer of the world. In 1962 he won The Master of Leica in Germany. He had hundreds of  exhibitions all around the world.

From Bertrand Russell to Winston Churchill, Arnold Toynbee to Picasso, Salvador Dali he took photographs of many famous character and interviewed with them.

Most of Ara Güler’s photographs are in National Library in Paris, also in USA Nebraska University Sheldon Collection, in private collections in Boston, Chicago and New York. Furthermore, his photographs are being exhibited in Ludwig Museum in Köln Germany and Das Imaginarische Photo Museum. In Fotoğrafevi, for the 77th year celebrations “77 Years Past by” named exhibition is being opened.

Some Significant Awards of Ara Güler

-          MASTER OF LEICA title which is being given by Leica to only 38 photographers around the world, 1961 Germany.

-          He was chosen one of the “7 Star Photographer ” by BRITISH JOURNAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY YEAR BOOK in England.

Bedri Baykam

 

Bedri Baykam was born in the year 1957 as the second son of a CHP parliamentarian Dr. Suphi Baykam and a high architect engineer. He started to paint in the age of two. He opened exhibitions in Bern and Geneva when he was only 6.

 

On 1960's in which he was known as the wonderkid he kept opening exibitions continuously in art centers of both Europe and America, attracting attention. Continuing to Istanbul French Lycee, Bedri Baykam moved to Paris in 1975.

 

He was graduated with a master degree from Sorbonne University studying economics and business. In the

same period he also studied acting in a private school named L'Actorat.

 

Moving to America on 1980 he studied arts and cinema studies until 1984.

 

Baykam who stayed in America until 1987 during these years continued opening many exhibitions in San Francisco, New York, Istanbul and Paris.

 

In 1987 he moved his workshop to Istanbul and opened 92 personal exhibitions and participated plenty

combined ones until now. He also shot many short films and videos and took role in some short and long films.

Baykam has 17 published books.

 

He is one of the active members of “Atatürkçü Düşünce Derneği”(Supports and defends Ataturk’s ideas) and “Cagdas Yasami Destekleme Dernegi” (supports modern life), he is also one of the founders and the second  chairman of  Association of Plastic Arts.

 

In the 1995 congress of CHP (a political party) he was elected as a council member and worked for 3 years time.

 

In Güneş, Cumhuriyet, Aydinlik and Aksam newspapers and Tempo magazine he wrote articles, for 3 years in Prima TV he prepared and presented a cultural argument program named as “The Color of The Era”, for 2 years time worked as the editor of Artist-Skala art magazine.

 

Now he is writing political articles in Cumhuriyet newspaper, and art articles for other art magazines.

On FBTV represents a football program named “2F 1B”

 

One of the pioneers of new- expressionism movement Baykam is also known with his multi – media installations (Livart) and his collage political art pieces.

 

In December 1999 his retrospective exhibition reflecting his 40 years art adventure was opened in Istanbul at AKM.

 

American director Stefan R. Svetiev’s film called "This Has Been Done Before" is completed in the same time in which he explores all his political and art carrier.

 

Boyut Publishing Group also published a wide 480 pages monograph named: "I'm Nothing But I'm Everything"

Baykam is also the owner of the Pyramid Film Production and Publishing company in Istanbul.

 

In May 1997 he married to Journalist Sibel (Yağcı) Baykam, in January 1999 Their son Suphi was born.

 

Cem Boyner

 

Cem Boyner who was born in 1955, in Istanbul graduated from Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Bogazici. Same year started working in the family company Altınyıldız Group. Presently he is the delegete member of Boyner Holding. He is married to Umit Boyner and has four children.

Cem Boyner, since high school years was interested in amateur photography. At Robert College, he started photography with Aydin Ungan. Started taking underwater photographs in 1996, Exhibited his photographs that he shot in Corsica, Red Sea, Philippines, Endonesia, Maldives and in Turkey Bodrum, Fethiye, Göcek, Hisarönü and Datça in his first personal exhibition named “Underwater”.

Cem Boyner opened his second personal exhibition in 2005. The exhibition consists of portraits named “Near Far Away” and the one consists of human bodies “Far Very Near” were visited by 50 thousand people in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Kocaeli.

 

Gökşin Sipahioğlu

 

Gökşin Sipahioğlu was born in Izmir in 1926, after finishing Saint Joseph High school he attended school of Journalism in the University of Istanbul.

 

He was the editor of Istanbul Express in 1954. He has published Yeni Gazete, a newspaper giving a high priority to photographs. While he was the editor in chief of Vatan newspaper by introducing the early press system he has broguht a modern concept to journalism. By doing so he has succeded to triple the circulation. In 1966 as Hurriyet newspaper's Paris reporter, his photographes were distributed all around the world by agencies such as Dalmas, Reporters Associés, Gamma of France and Black Star of America.

 

The photograps he had taken during the 1968 student revolts in Paris, were used in Jean Bertolino's « Le Trublions » published by Stock Publications.

 

In the same year Sipahoğlu has joined Gamma Agency. After he has started working in the agency, he has decided to go to Chechoslovakia to attend the Bratislava Conference in which the world's communist leaders should attend also. As the agency declined his idea he decided to bear the expences personally and went to Prag, two weeks later Chechoslovakia was invaded by the Soviets.

 

In 1969 with his journalist American wife Phyllis Springer he founded the photograph agency carrying his own name Sipa press, which today is acknowledged as one of the biggest photography agency in the world. At the beginning working with Agency Dalmas and later with reporters Associés and Gamma to distribute and sell photographs, Sipahioğlu, with his diverse photo-interview understanding, his skills of journalism and management, in many years while competing with Gamma and Sygma he has transformed Sipa Press which was born in a 16 m2 Champs-Elysées office in Paris, into an agency with 8 thousand m2 offices.

 

Gökşin Sipahioğlu knew that « An important Agency needed wide financial capabilities to gather the greatest photographers » . His agency has opened its doors to young talents, supported and trained them and let them to joıin other important agencies. Sipa Press became a school for a lot of photographers like Christine Spengler, Patrick Chauvel, Francis Apesteguy, Alain Mingam and many more.

 

In addition to daily and weekly press, Sipa Press started working with the gretaest photo-interview magasines of the world in more than 30 countries.

 

From the different portraits of various politicians covering the first pages of dailies, to the behind the scene photographes of famous actors and actresses, everything was within the scope of Sipa Press. Any war, disaster, sport contest, art event, official visit, revolt in any part of the world, in short, phographers were on their way to any event that interests the press.

 

Due to financial difficulties arising from global capitalisation, change of the photographers' social status in France and digital photography's affects on the sector, Sipahioğlu in 2001, has sold his 35 year old agency Sipa with its archives containing more than 30 million photographs that has witnessed the world history, to French Media Group Sud Communication. However, following conflicts with the new Sipa management regarding the agency's management he had resigned from his position as Editor in Chief.

 

In 1994 he was decorated by « Arts et Lettres » by French government. In November 1998, he had arranged an exhibition, named « Barricades », consisting of his photographs taken in May 1968, in Paris, within the frame of « Mois de la Photo 98 ». The founder of Sipa Press, holder of numerous awards in international and national arena, Gökşin Sipahioğlu was decorated with « The State Medal of Merit » in 7th April 2000 by the President of the Republic of Turkey. He was decorated with « Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres » by M. Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, the minister of Culture of France in September 2004. Finally he was decorated with «  Chevalier dans l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur » by Jacques Chirac the President of Republic of France. His latest exhibition of photography titled « doğru yerde doğru zamanda » « at the right place at the right time » was opened in 7th September 2006 in Istanbul Modern. In this exhibition 119 photographs belonging to Sipahioğlu, one of the most important name in press photography in the world and Turkey for nearly half a century, are exhibited.

İbrahim Zaman

He was born in 1937, in Adapazarı. In 1959 he was interested in artistic photography. He became the founder member of “GRUP 5” and “AFAK” in Adapazarı.

 

He opened his first personal exhibition in Istanbul in 1967 named “Pigeons” He contributed International and National numerous exhibitions, competitions, slide shows. He has got plenty of slide productions.

His photographs took place in Eczacıbaşı prestige annuals, national and international advertisement publications, posters, billboards, leaflets, Turkey’s prestige albums and in many other magazines.

He gave portrait lessons in Art Faculty of Marmara University.

 

Presently he is writing educational articles in Photograph Magazine.

He also took place as jury member in many national and international contests.

His “40 Years with Zaman”photo album, “Zaman in Turkey” photograph book, “Turkish Photographers Library” books are published.

His “Fields” named new book will be publishing soon.

Furthermore Those calendars; “Black Sea Houses”, “Turkey: Open Air Museum”, “Fantastic 2000”, “Semazens” were printed and in many other mixed calendars his photographs took places.

He has given 33 photos to the book named “Images of Life in Turkey” printed for the International HABITAT 2 Conference.

 

İzzet Keribar

 

Izzet Keribar, born in İstanbul on 1936 was interested with photography since childhood and in 1957 he went to Korea, where he had the chance of developing his technique and gained experience for one year period.

After a long period of time, in 1980 he returned to photography. Since then he has been orginising photography tours both within Turkey and abroad and continuously produces photographs intensely. His archives of Turkey and world photography is one of the most important in our country.

 

Izzet Keribar is an Honourary Member of IFSAK. In 1985 he was honoured by A.Fiap (Artist), In 1988 by E.Fiap (Excellency) titles by Federation of Internatial Photography. Keribar who has realised numerous personal photography exhibitions and slide shows within Turkey and abroad, since 1982, is attending ISFAK photography courses as lecturer, and often acts as juror in photography contests in Turkey.

 

The most important prizes he has won are; NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Traveller magazine's 2nd place amongst 16000 photographs in 1991 , Jarusalem Post Newspaper's 1st place amongst 13000 works, 2nd and 3rd place in Ballantyne competition, 1st place in 1999 and 2003 of FUJI European Press Awards, Legion d'honneur given by French Ministery of Culture, more than 40 medals and honourable mentions from Fiap and numerous prizes within Turkey.

 

Lately, executing photography professionally, Keribar also is helping to improve photography in Turkey and by the aid of his photographs, to promote Turkey in abroad.

 

Also in the book “Turkey, Throughout A Country” there are 48,  in the book “Cappadocia – Poetic Rocks” there are 38 photographs of him took places, and in many other books hundreds of his photos were printed.


During the 75th year celebrations of the Republic of Turkey his photos are being exibited under the name “My Beloved Turkey”, with the same title he also performed a dia show.

 

During the 15th IFSAK Istanbul Photography Days he opened his 40th year exibition named “40 years with Zaman” and later “Zaman in Turkey” He is also an honour member of IFSAK

Lütfi Özgünaydın

He was born in 1945 in Toybelen village of Kemaliye of Erzincan. In 1962 became primary school teacher and worked in various village schools.

 

In the year 1969 started working as reporter for Hürriyet News Agency. Worked 13 years as a reporter. Under the guidance of a colleague in the agency he met with photography. After winning the prize in the Abdi İpekçi Interview Contest this time he met with literature. He started writing for Milliyet Art and Art Matter magazines.

He published his first book named “Barrage” in which he put together his small stories about Keban Barrage Lake.

 

In 1980’s his book “From Village to City” is being published, and in 2004 story book named “ Stone Road” met the readers.

 

Meanwhile his photography works continued. He had nearly 70 exhibitions and shows.

 

After Hürriyet Agency he published a local newspaper called “Gurbet”(abroad) and became the editor of it.

He published a children’s book named “Waterfall Willow” also with his photographs of waterfalls in it.

 

He won prizes in journalism and his photographs. For a long time he is not attending photograph contests.

Özgünaydın who made photography a life style for himself, carries on his work by traveling around.

He is writing articles in “Erzincan Önsöz” local newspaper. Also his continues writing articles for Photography magazine.

Mehmet Günyeli

Was born in Kadıköy, Istanbul. After Saint Joseph High School, he has finished his education in Faculty of Political Science. He has stardted photography in 1980. He has joined various exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, made slideshows, won various prizes. Inthe meantime he has continued with his works and research on History of Photography. He has a very wide range of archive regarding History of Photography. Lately he concentrated his photography works on Country Projects. He has visited most of the countries all around the world and took pictures.

 

His photographs were published in numerous newspapers and magazines in Turkey and abroad. Mehmet Günyeli's album named "Viva Cuba Libre" is his first country project.

 

Muhsin Divan

 

Was born in 1954 in İstanbul Ortaköy. Graduate of İstanbul University Business Administration. Has a managerial position at marine sector.

 

Is a member of İFSAK (İstanbul Association of Photograpy and Cinema Amateurs). Is an honarary member of İFSAK and works for İFSAK Education Team. He also carries out the program “Cinema Culture” at İFSAK. Has been TFSF (Turkish Federation of Photography Art) Assistant President.

 

He’sthe consultant for the Marine Trade Center Culture and Arts.

 

As a person addicted to photography, has had exhibition in Turkey and abroad, made shows, got various awards from national and international competitions.

 

Has collections of old photography machines, ink pen, inkstands, geographic atlasses.

Is married and has two children.

Nevzat Çakır

The photograpy adventure of Nevzat Çakır started in his childhood when he borrowed a camera from a friend.

Graduated from İstanbul University dentistry in 1967. In 1970, he concentrated on activities about photography. In 1983, was honored with the AFIAP title. In 1984, together with five friends, they found FOG Photography Group.

Osman Erk

 

Was born in Ankara in 1952. Bought his first camera –a Lyubitel- 2 years after the March 27 revolution. During high school, borrowed his father’s Buccaneer camera from time to time, and started taking photographs at school trips.

He bought his Bell&Howell second camera in 1970. He made his first black&white printings during his membership at the METU Photography Club.

 

Bought his third camera, a Canon FTB, while studying in the U.S. for the one semester photography lesson. He took this lesson just to fulfil the need to take a compulsory art lesson. However he then took great joy of it. He participated with 3 photographs to a contest in 1973. he couldn’t win.

 

In 1984, he met photograpy artist İbrahim Demirel and they never split again. He has a different place for Gallery Sanatyapım with his warm heart, conversations, glasses and pipe.

 

For a period of time, he collected cameras apart from old books, stocks. He’s content to have Ali Enis Oza’s camera and his seal. A few of Oza’s original photographs are on the walls of his house.

 

He’s now drawing away from collecting. He’s heading to “being” rather than “owning”.

 

His first exhibition was at Gallery Sanatyapım in Ankara in December 2000. The photographs in this exhibition were published in the book “Doğrudan Dolaylı”. The book called “Olağan Biçimler” involves the photographs that were exhibited in his second exhibition in İstanbul, in September 2001.

He took great pleasure from the slide show called “India” in June 2004.

Rauf R. Denktaş

He was born in Cyprus, Baf on January 27, 1924. graduated from Lefkoşa British School. After graduation, he made translation in Mağusa, clerkship at the court and a year of teaching at the British School.

 

Studied law in England and in 1947 he was graduated from Lincoln’s Inn. The same year he turned back to Cyprus and started working as a lawyer. In 1948, he worked as an associate at the council of constitution, which was founded by the governor. He was assigned as the prosecutor and continued his duty until 1958.

After resigning from his govermental duty, he started playing active role to solve the problems of the society and was selected the Head of Federation of Cyprus Turkish Institutions. He played important role in translating the weekly “Haftanın Sesi” newspaper. In 1960, after being assigned as the Head of Turkish Community Council and Head of Executive Commitee, he resigned from his duty at the Federation of Cyprus Turkish Institutions.

 

Between 1960 and 1963, he published the NACAK newspaper.

 

At the general elections on June 5, 1970, he was again selected the Head of Turkish Community Council. On February 16, 1973, he was selected as the president one more time and on February 1973, after taking the presidetial oath he became the Assistant Prime Minister of Cyprus and President of Cyprus Turkish Governance.

 

After the Turkish Peace Operation in 1974, on February 13, 1975, he announced the Turkish Federal Republic and ran his duties as the President of the Govenment and the Parlament.

 

According to the Federal Republic constitution, with the first general elections on June 20, 1976, with a big

majority, he was selected by the public. On 1981, he was selected as President again. In 1983, he announced North Cyprus Turkish Republic and became prime minister in 1985.

 

He won the prime minister elections in 1990, 1995 and in 2000. In the elections on April 17, 2005, he was not a candidate and he delivered the duty to Mehmet Ali Talat on April 24.

 

Rauf Denktaş was honored with Medal of Merit for his services by Turkish prime minister Ahmet Necdet Sezer on July 6, 2005.

 

Denktaş has 50 published books and a film scenario (İşgal Altında). His hobbies are wiritng and Photography. Had photograpy exhibitions in the U.S.A., Australia, England, Italy, Turkey, Poland, France, Austria and gave countless confrences. He received various awards and honorary doctorate and professor’s degrees.

 

Reha Bilir

 

Reha Bilir was born in Beyşehir. He’s a graduate of İstanbul University Faculty of Pharmaceutics and has his own pharmacy. Started amateur photography during high school years while studying at Eskişehir Anadolu Lisesi and has been doing it for 30 years.

Got his first prize from Akbank Inter-regionary Contest and has various other prizes. In 2000, he received encouragement award from Pamukbank Photography Contest with his series phographs called “Son Ustalar” (The Last Masters)

Because of his awards from contests under the guidance of International Photography Federation, he was awarded with the AFIAP title.

Reha Bilir, whose photographs were exhibited in many combined exhibitions in many countries, had the chance to exhibit his photographs and slides in many cities in Turkey. He was introduced ,by Pamukbank’s publication “Photography in Turkey” ,as one of the first Turkish photographers who made adjustments on photographs by computer.


His interviews, photographs, portfolios were published in many magazines, newspapers and professional publication. He was called as the jury to many national and international contests.

On the albums “Balıkçılar” and “Pazar”, by Eczacıbaşı, his photographs were published. In a private magazine, his photo-interviews “Gezginci Dervişlerin Kalender Torunları” and “Ben Dönerim, Gökler Döner” about the lives of migrant grand-children of Pir Sultan Abdal and about Mevlana. In 1999 he was among the country team that won the World Cup in Switzerland and got mension prize in 2004 in England. Bilir was selected for the country team for 5 times. He was awarded with “Honorary Fellow Townsman” certificate by the municipality of Yeşildağ, in 2004 forhis contribution in letting the country be better known in Turkey and abroad with his work “Leylekler Vadisi”. He’s a member of EFSAD(Eskişehir), AFAD(Adana), AKFİD(Akşehir) and his articles were published in Adana Life and Photo Digital magazines. His interviews on art are published in Konya Life Magazine. The artist has participated many photography activities, photography days, symposiums, panels and photography fairs at various universities and associations. Has been consultant at the photography activities at Selçuk University for 3 years.

 

Sabit Kalfagil

Was born in Elazığ in 1934. Finished Konya High School and İTU Faculty of Architecture. Worked for the municipality of İstanbul. He was the head of reconstruction and assistant principal.

Started photography in1960 as a hobby. At the beginning his works included Architecture and documentation of archeological works. In time, it became a mission to witness the Anatolian people, nature and culture. Made many trips to Anatolia. These photographs were exhibited and awarded in many national and international exhibitions.


Among these, there is second prize in 1981 FIAP International contest, first prize in 1983 State Photography contest, first prize in 1988 Photography contest, first prize in 1989 International Islamic Conference.


Has participated many combined exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Had two personal exhibitions in 1972 and 1988. many of his photographs were used in the publications of Ministry of Tourism and on posters of Turkey. Has attended national and international syposiums  and confrences. Made presentations. Was assigned as jury at many contests.


In 1981 his book called “Composition in the Art of Photography” and in 1988 the album called “Fatih Monuments” were published.

In 2002, his book called “The Light upon Turkey” from Ministry of Culture, in 2004 an album from The Library of Turkish Photographers, in 2005 the album of the retrospective exhibition of the years 1960-1970, in 2006 another book called “Structural Aspects of Photography and Composition in the Art of Photography” were published.


At first photography was only a hobby but then it became a second profession. Now he’s a tutor in the field. In 1978 he took part in the foundation of Institute of Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts.


Until 1989, he worked as a part-time academician. In 1989 he got his assistant professor’s degree and became the Head of Art of Documentary Photography at Mimar Sinan University Academy of Fine Arts.


In 1993, together with Kamil Fırat, they prepared a 9 episodes documentary called “Anatolia, in the Search of Light” for TRT. In 1998 he was assigned as professor to Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Photography. He got retired in 2001. 

Is an honarary member of PTFD and İFSAK.

 

Şakir Eczacıbaşı

 

He was born in İzmir in 1929. After having graduated from Robert College, he studied at University of London.

When he turned back to Turkey, he became one of the publishers of Vatan’s famous Sanat Yaprağı.

He joined Eczacıbaşı Pharmaceutical Corporation in 1955. Between 1956-1967 he published “New Trends in Medicine” which was admired by the art and culture society as well as the scientific society. Şakir Eczacıbaşı, who got prizes in international festivals, prepared the series of Eczacıbaşı Cultural Films with Sabahattin Eyüboğlu and Pierre Biro. Among these, “Walls of Color” won the Cultural Films award of the European Council in 1964.


Şakir Eczacıbaşı pioneered the foundation of Turkish Sinematek
Association and was its president for 10 years.


During the 1970’s he became the General Manager of Eczacıbaşı Pharmaceutical Corporation. In 1980 he became the Head of the Executive Council of Eczacıbaşı Group and in 1993 he became the president of board of directors at Eczacıbaşı Holding.

 

Until 1996, Şakir Eczacıbaşı remained president of the Eczacıbaşı Sports Club which was founded by himself and gained important successes and represented Turkey in the areas of basketball, volleyball and table tennis at European Cups.


Eczacıbaşı’s interest in photography first started in the 1960’s. His works attracted great attention in Turkey and abroad and he became one of the outstanding contemporary photography artists. So far he had 14 exhibitions in Turkey and 25 in various western countries. His books Moments 1983, Colors of Turkey 1997, Doors and Windows 2001, A Selection: 1965-2005 2005 include some of the selected photographs of the artist.

Since 1968, Şakir Eczacıbaşı published Eczacıbaşı Colored Photography Yearbooks which includes works of Turkish photographers.


He prepared books called “A Portrait in Turkey”, “Scenes of İstanbul”, “Images of People from Turkey”, “Fishermen”, “Houses”, “Ways, Streets”, “Markets... Bazaars...” , that distinguished writers and photographers took part. His compilation books of Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde attracted great attention.


He left business life in 1996 and was awarded with French Art and Literature Medal and Turkish Republic Medal of Merit for his services. He now is the president of the board of directors of İstanbul Culture and Art Foundation since 1993. They organize 5 international art festivals.

Şemsi Güner

Was born in İstanbul. After high school, he started State Conservatory and studied tehere for 2 years and then came to Bab-ı Ali. There, he started drawing caricatures and pictures for Türkiye Publishing house, Hayat and other important magazines of that time.

He also did graphics for advertisement companies. However, after meeting with photography, heleft all his other areas of work.

He dedicated himself fully to photography and went all around Anatolia and collected an archive of thousands of subjects.

On the other hand he photographed an eleven episodes encyclopedia all by himself and this was a record hard to break.

After that, he worked at important cities and regions of the world. His works were published in Turkey and abroad. His biography can be found in “Photographer Enclopedia International 1839 to the Present”, “Encyclopedia Brittanica” and “Turkish and World Wide Famous People”.


He found the five thousand years old Hitit, Phrygian, Urartu and Rome King Pathways. Within a four years work, he photographed these ways and drew their maps. By an agreement with Nezih Demirkent, he published these under the name “King Pathways in Anatolia” within Dünya Publication Group.


Some of his works were published in Photography Year Book, Stern Magazin, Insight Guides. Inside Guides books introduced him as the “chief Photographer”.


Apart from his exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Denmark, France and in Turkey; his photographs were published on many posters of the Ministry of Tourism and THY.


By exhibiting the photographs of Louvre Museum, he advertised it on TV.


His biography is on Who is who in Turkey, Turkish and World Wide Famous People, Encyclopedia Britannica  and in various magazines. He emphasizes more on digital photograpy in his work.


According to him, digital photography, is the beginning of a new era in photography. With its creativity and technical touch, it’s the biggest event in its field, it’s like a renaissance. From now on, photographers have to learn digital camera and related to that the necessary computer softwares.

    

Serdar Bilgili

Serdar Bilgili, born in İstanbul in 1963, first started photography at Robert College where he studied. He, then went to the United States for his graduate degree in business administration. There he also graduated from photography, other than business administration. During this period, he had two photography exhibitions in the U.S.A.

Apart from his identity as a businessman, Bilgili continues working on photography. He found Photography and education Foundation in 2006. He’s still working on the establishment of the Photography Center within the foundation, that will cover all areas of photography.

 

Thierry Bouët

 

He was born in Paris in 1959. Before he started his photography career, he studied law. He took photographs in the army and between 1981-82, he was the assistant of Tony Kent, the fashion photographer. Afterwards, worked at the Harcourt Studio as art director and photographer. In 1983, worked as photographer for publications like Vogue, , Harper’s Bazaar, Elle USA, Marie-Claire, L’Egoiste, Vanity Fair and Libération.

In 1995, he had exhibitions in many countries and his book ,about the people living in hotels, Hôtels Particuliers (Smithsonian Publishing) was published.


In 2000, he was among the 5 top fashion photographers in the ranking of GO Magazine. Apart from that, he arranged an exhibition in İstanbul called “The End of the Century” (Fin de siécle.


The same year, with his best friend, they participated the FNAC Contest with the postcards they have sent each other until then and was awarded with the “Attention Talent”

In 2001, he discovered the smallest village of France, where only two people lived. He prepared a 90 minutes documentary about this region for Films D’ici and his story was published on the first issue of the Le Monde 2 Magazine.


After 4 years of research, in 2003, his book called Chasse a l’homme (Alternatives Publishing) was published. It’s about women commiting their lives to find the “right man”.this work was exhibited at the Clermont-Ferrand Photography Festival.

Since 2004, he has been showing interest in laziness and started working on people sleeping on extraordinary beds. His work about the subject has been published in AD Architectural Digest. A book and an exhibition about this subject is at planning stage.

The Photography of Thierry Bouët is based on the sociological analysis of the time. He is interested in  people that come together for certain reasons, but without willing. These reasons could be lifestyle (people living in hotels), restrictions (convicts, small units of living), choice (people that look for love in newspapers), education (children that go to school to a far away region of Diyarbakır) or being different (people sleeping on extraordinary beds).


As an extraordinary photographer, Thierry Bouët has kept record of all his work, life, trips and feelings on postcards he sent to his best friend and no matter how late, he hopes to publish them.
